Which Is Your Internet Portal?

By: David Militello

Visiting several sites would not happen if Internet sites had the option to choose. Alternatively, you would be going to only one site, an Internet portal, for everything that you want and need. In fact, the foremost goal of any Internet portal is to create a sense of belonging within a virtual community.

Internet portals simply want your undivided attention the entire time that you are online. The sites become attractive to users ultimately because of the wide array of free services they can give. Portals regularly provide free e mail accounts. Included in the other features these sites have are instant messaging programs, chat rooms, and message boards. The popular search engine tops the list.

Seeing all these services at your disposal gives you the sense that you are not merely dropping by the site. Thus, the American express to Web sites is what I appropriately named for this. The term members stuck well with people more than customers or cardholders, as revealed by an American express survey.

Thus the slogan Membership has its Privileges. The operation of portals is pretty much the same thing. Why do the portal sites place emphasis on the idea of belonging to a community? It all comes down to dollars and cents. Because these sites provide primarily free services to you and me, they have to generate income by selling online advertising space. Since you will feel more like a member and will enjoy more free services, then there will be a tendency for you to invest more of your online time at that site. And that means the site can charge its advertisers more.

Portals will always have ads in every nook and cranny. Through its netcenter site, Netscape became a pioneer as a portal site. Other Internet companies collaborated with it to offer many free services. The e mail of the netcenter is actually USA.net's.

Netcenter also offers among its many services business related discussion groups, a career center, an online auto buying area, a personal finance area and a multitude of online shopping spots. Internet search engines have long been popular starting points for Web surfers. We don't wonder now why many of these search engines have adopted the portal concept.

Portal features of AltaVista include e mail and search facilities. A language translator is one of the features that the site has. As a search tool, Yahoo has always been one of my favorite stops on the Web, and the addition of portal features makes this site all the more appealing. Free online surfing and e mail is available. Creating a my yahoo for yourself is another one of the site's features.

You can either download Yahoo pager or look for its online java version if you are a macintosh or unix user. You can also sign up to have yahoo as your Internet service provider. Grocery shopping becomes an ease through eGrocer. The excited product finder gives you a new way of doing your online shopping. Sites and prices will pop up after you type what you need. And of course, there's access to their search engine, which I consider one of the best.

Lycos gives you access to more or less the same features. Lycos has good features but it doesn't stand out much since it pretty much offers the same thing as any portal site. Since lycos offers free home pages, though, it does set itself apart from others.
