Watches are a fine piece of jewellery

Jewellery in the form of a watch makes a fabulous gift for anyone. A watch that is encrusted with diamonds can be just as dazzling as a couple of beautiful diamond rings and if looked after will impress your friends for many years to come. To give your watch the best care, to allow it to continue to keep time it will need regular maintenance and you can do this yourself.

All watches are highly tuned pieces of mechanical engineering; both sensitive and fragile, watches need to be placed somewhere safe when not worn. The slightest fall or bang could disrupt a watches delicate highly tuned movement at the back of its facial features. Washing up water would not do this type of watch much good, but a light cleaning with a soft brush on a regular basis would ensure it is kept in good condition.

There are of course, stronger watches that are made to be kept on a person's wrist while taking part in swimming, mountaineering, scuba diving or many other hazardous sports. If you can release the bracelet away from the watches head it will allow more versatility, as you can simply wash it in a light solution of detergent and water. Take the watch itself and using a small but softly bristled toothbrush, gently clean the bits of dirt that will have become attached to your watch.

Ideally use a cleaner that has been specially manufactured for cleaning watches. However if the watch is too dirty or you are not happy at the thought of cleaning this special timepiece, take it along to a specialist or a jewellery store who has a qualified person who is trained in the cleaning of watches.
