Types of Polyurethane Foam

When considering using polyurethane foam, it is not necessary to become an expert in rubber and foam. Frankly, it is a very complicated area with new developments and indeed new forms of rubber and foam being manufactured all the time. It is useful, however, to acquire some knowledge as a starting point before consulting the various foam suppliers and foam manufacturers.

One of the first things to consider with polyurethane foam is that there are two main types. These are polyester foam and polyether foam. Generally speaking, polyester foam tends to be stiffer than polyether foam. However, polyester has a number of specific qualities which mean it is used in preference to polyether foam in some specific applications. Of course, the reverse is also true.

For example polyester foam is valued for its high tensile strength, and its general resistance to atmospheric conditions. The things which polyester foam is resistant to include ultra violet light, daylight, temperature, solvents and ageing.

This is why polyester foam is the choice for air and dust filters. Polyester foam is also the choice of foam for acoustic equipment particularly where noise reduction is sought. Perhaps the most obvious example is the wind shield on a microphone. (That’s the bulbous cover on the end of a microphone if you’re not a sound engineer.)

Polyester foam is particularly good at soaking up water and liquid so it is no surprise that it is used in sponges and wipes. Closed cell polyester is a denser version of the foam and is used in floatation equipment and also some forms of insulation.
