Tooth Discoloration

By: dds hawary1010

Tooth discoloration can be of two main types: extrinsic (caused by substances we introduce into our mouths) and intrinsic, (caused by conditions in the body which influence tooth formation or color).

Causes Tooth Discoloration:
The four most common remedies for tooth discoloration are:
· Bonding
· Bleaching
· Veneers
· Caps (Crowns)
Bonding is simply adding a little tooth-colored combined material to "fill in the blanks." One of the most common uses of the bonding technique is to fill in a gap between front teeth.
Tooth Whitening is actually a mild bleaching process that restores stained or discolored teeth to a healthy, natural color.
Veneers are custom, porcelain facings that are bonded to the front surfaces of teeth to whiten teeth, close spaces, straighten teeth, or repair chipped or worn teeth. The veneers are only about 1 mm thick. when the veneer is bonded to the tooth, the tooth doesn't feel or look "thicker".
A crown fits over the entire top of the tooth above the gum line. Crowns cover, protect, seal and strengthen a tooth. A crown is needed when a filling just will not work. A crown may be made of white porcelain, gold, or porcelain fused to gold.

There are several causes of tooth discoloration, including:

· Drinking coffee, tea, or colas.
· Tobacco use. Smoking or chewing tobacco can stain teeth.
· Poor dental hygiene.
· Dental materials. Some of the materials used in dentistry, such as amalgam restorations, especially silver sulfide-containing materials, can cast a gray-black color to teeth.
· Aging - The dentin underneath the enamel of a tooth gradually darkens with age.
· Genetics. Some people have naturally brighter or thicker enamel than others.
· Accidents - If a tooth has been traumatized, sometimes the nerve will gradually "die", and the tooth becomes dark.

Prevention:

Brushing your teeth after every meal will help to prevent some stains. Dentists recommend that you rinse your mouth with water after having wine, coffee or other drinks or foods that can stain your teeth. Regular cleanings by a dental hygienist also will help to prevent surface stains.
Avoidance of the foods and beverages that cause stains.

Going to the dentist every half a year for a clean up is also a very good way to prevent the teeth from getting discolored.

Another very healthy way to prevent natural tooth discoloration is to consider cutting back or quitting on smoking and drinking coffee or wines.
To prevent children from getting stained teeth, parents should always check out the fluoride concentration of the water the family drinks, and this can be done by calling up the local health department. To prevent intrinsic stains in children, avoid overexposure to fluorides.

Treatment:

Discolored teeth that are nonvital must be treated endodontically (root canal treatment) or extracted. Discolored teeth that remain vital can be treated with dental restorations or by crown therapy.

Treatment is always necessary for nonvital (dead) teeth! The majority of discolored teeth are nonvital .

Enamel microabrasion, Bleaching (tooth whitening) are the types of medi care treatments and Dental restorations, Dental extractions and implantations are surgical treatments.
