Tips to Start a Painting Business

By: JJ Branderson

It is easy to establish a painting business. It isn't so easy to start a successful painting service. There are 5 key steps to opening a lucrative painting business:

1. Planning-- Most painting contractors think that planning is a misuse of efforts. They regard planning as little more than idle dreaming. They would like to get out there and apply paint. In the end, that is how to make money. But putting paint on the wall will only happen at the end of a process that includes advertising, estimating, and closing the deal. You must ascertain how many leads you require, what rate is profitable, and a lot more. Addressing these issues is what the planning process is all about.

Let us say that you have modest goals--you would like to earn $35,000 a year. What number of projects will you require in order to earn this? What number of man hours will this require? What number of leads must you have to create so as to sell these jobs? How will you create those leads? At what price must you sell in order to make your wanted profits? These are the types of issues that have to be clarified. (And to answer most of these issues, there are many further issues that have to be clarified.)

The failure to consider these issues--or as is more frequent, simply ignoring them--is an invitation for stress, frustration, and bankruptcy. If you don't determine the solutions, how can you possibly take the actions that will create the outcomes that you desire? In short, you can't.

Even the most effective of plans will not go flawlessly. There are many variables and conditions outside of your power. But the lack of planning makes almost every aspect of the business an unknown, and therefore, uncontrollable.

2. Systems-- Systems supply explicit directions for accomplishing a specific job. To illustrate, if you wish to balance your check book there are specific actions that you should take. This is also true for a contracting business.

3. Know your numbers-- Among the most often ignored aspect of opening a painting business is finance and accounting. And yet, this is the one part that painting contractors are typically the weakest. If you don't know your numbers, you can't charge the appropriate price. And if you don't charge a profitable rates, you won't be in business very long.

4. Estimating-- A lot of painting contractors--both inexperienced and experienced--think that a contractor ought to be able to look at a particular project and know the time and materials that it should require. This is nothing more than conjecture. And it is susceptible to many problems. Two of the biggest issues are that it depends completely on the experience of the estimator and mistakes are virtually impossible to identify.

But what if you could remove these potentially profit-destroying troubles? What if you can bid jobs accurately and consistently? The best news is, you can. If you have an pricing process.

A system is a precise series of steps that you take to attain a desired outcome. If you want dependable and profitable bids, then having a specific process for bidding jobs goes a long ways in the direction of making that a reality.

Sales-- You may dismiss sales as a filthy word, but if you intend to own a successful painting business, you should accept the truth that you are a salesman. (Or you have to employ a salesman.) Before you will own a profitable painting business, you must be successful at selling paint jobs.

It is certainly viable to launch a painting business without using these 5 steps. Without a doubt, nearly all painting contractors likely did so. But launching a contracting business is not the same as launching a profitable contracting company.

Do not think that you have to discover sound business methods on your own. Study the errors, and more importantly, the successes of other people. Then, when you have built a successful business, you can start to create a superior turn.
