The dynamics of community effort in physician recruitment

By: Melisa jones

Even if it has long been known by the residents of a major US city's community that they need doctors, knowing that the doctors need them too has only been realized recently. It is very important that the community is packaged and promoted as desirable and attractive to ensure success of any recruitment effort. Would-be physicians would like to ensure that good schools for their children, a safe neighborhood, good housing and other social opportunities for themselves and their families will be available to them.

The board of trustees, administration and staff of a medical hospital ensures that recruiting new physicians is their chief priority. Obtaining community effort is the greatest kind of recruiting and this has been known to recruiting hospitals through their vast experiences. Several areas of improvement in health care delivery has been revealed through thorough study and research, but it will not hampen the recruitment process and it will continue until such matters are resolved.

A deficit in healthcare providers in most US rural areas has been a huge issue for years. A federal medium has recently defined these rural areas as unaided and unserved communities when it comes to the healthcare aspect. It assigns a set of criteria to each community consisting of a series of designated point ratings in each of the following categories such as the percentage of the population below poverty level, percentage of the population over 65, infant mortality rate, and the number of primary care physicians per every thousand of the population.

Doctors who specialize in obstetrics-gynecology, pediatrics, family medicine and internal medicine are the only ones considered to be primary care doctors. A consensus between the board of directors and medical staff on what services are needed must be made after establishing this. Most hospitals have made hiring of more obstetrician gynecologists their top priority recently. Specialists in emergency room and family medicine are also needed.

The community rolling out the carpet and ensuring that both they and the hospital display what they can offer the physicians is part of the very complex physician recruitment process. Advertising in major medical publications throughout the country is the first step in hiring potential physicians. Luring fresh graduates and residents from medical schools in the area can be done by sending letters to these schools. Members of the local community who engage in medical studies are asked to maintain contact while the friends of friends of their local doctors are constantly phoned and contacted.

A tour around town awaits the interested physician. He then gets a feel of the hospital and its staff members after a good meal. The hospital crew oftentimes go out of their way and offer their homes to throw a party for the potential new physicians while there are other times the orientations only happen in the hospital.

The doctor will be informed that he can partake in developing new specialties as the hospital will purchase the necessary equipment that will add to its existing support services like the radiology and pathology laboratories. He will also be told about the chance to continue his studies, and the assistance the hospital staff will extend so he can find a suitable office area and good insurance policies.

But it does not end here for the recruiter's offers must be more than just the hospital-related perks. The children of the physicians will be asked to see their would-be school after meeting the principal so that they can assess their new neighborhood.

They will then be introduced to bankers who will advise them on available mortgage and loan opportunities, as well real estate agents who can give in-depth advice on various housing needs. Nonetheless, the hospital team and the board can only do so much. Apart from the hospital team's strong recruitment efforts, they also rely on the support of the community in terms of being active resource persons ready to enlighten the physicians on any questions they may ask.
