Taking the Stench Out of Your Furry friend

By: Darren Mulroney

If you're a dog owner and your residence is next to a stream or on a ranch, then you probably understand very well that pups gravitate to smelly decomposed objects. Whether the smelly object is a deceased fish, manure, or moist rotten plants, pooches really like to roll in it and return home very stinky. This causes limitless enjoyment for canine animals, but understandably it is exceedingly frustrating for the owner. The dog odor results in them having to take time to rinse the dog or bring it to the pet groomer's shop, and on top of that they just plain make the entire house smell bad. And even the pet, there is no guarantee that the stench will permanently go away.

Some experts in the area of dogs theorize that canines roll around in such decaying matter for the purpose of "disguising" themselves by changing their scent. However, nobody knows why canines have that instinct to cover up their own odor. The explanation could possibly be that back in the days before canines were domesticated, they had to search for their food, so for the purpose of keeping their prey oblivious to their approach, they camoflaged their canine scent. An alternative rationale could be for the canine's self-preservation. Hiding their smell may have kept predatorial animals away, as well as other packs of territorial canines. Alternatively canines could actually get pleasure from that kind of odor and want to take it wherever they go. The truth is that we do not truly know for sure, and up to now we haven't been lucky enough to find a dog who could succinctly explain to us the reason!

The fastest, most effective method to take out stench from the canine's hair is to simply wash your dog. Try to utilize a shampoo that is specially intended for dogs. Human shampoo can strip the dogs hair of its necessary oils, exposing the defenseless skin to rashes and infections. Canine shampoo is made to cleanse the dog's fur, without stripping it of the natural oils. In the event that the animal's stink is especially strong, for example the odor of a skunk, washing the dog in tomato juice is one of the quickest ways to eradicate the smell.

If you have dog that consistently rolls in stinky substances, you may want to consider bringing him to a reliable pet groomer and having its hair clipped. The short coat will be more comfortable for the animal during the hot summer months and even though the shorter fur will not keep your pooch from rolling in the stinky substance, the shorter fur will be a lot easier for you to cleanse, and will dry faster.

In case you have correctly bathed your dog but you still smell a a powerful dog odor, then the pet's fur might not be the source of the smell, but it could instead be a more problematic health issue. Canines with bad dental cleanliness can release some extremely foul odors that circulate through the room or sometimes even the whole house. And it could be a sign of something more serious, like kidney problems or diabetic issues. An additional possibilty is that your pet has an infected anal sac, that is now extremely stinky. If you have not been able to eradicate the stink after a proper rinse, be sure to speak with a veterinarian to assist in diagnosing your animal's pungent little problem.
