Speedy Laser Hair Removal

By: Tomoko Weber

People with excessive facial or body hair generally suffer from the stigma of being different, doing what they can in private to deal with the hair while suffering emotional distress in public. In the past few months, two more options for hair removal were given to residents, one uses laser technology and the other one uses a more advanced form of light treatment. It is a family physician in Altoona who has been doing laser hair removal for the past couple of months. Saying that lasers give off high energy light was her.

As soon as you shine the light on skin with hair on it, the light does nothing to the skin but concentrates on the hair to destroy the hair follicle. She said it differs from electrolysis, which puts a needle in each hair follicle and zaps it with an electric current which is tedious and painful. Laser treatment can treat an upper lip in less than a minute while with electrolysis it can take 30 minutes. Here, per area, two to three treatments are needed. For women in this case, she usually does underarms, upper lips, chins, and bikini lines. For men in this case, they get hair removal on necks and backs and to thin out beards.

This procedure does not work well for people with dark pigmented skin and fine blond hair but there are some modifications that can be done in this case.

For this, expect the initial consultation and first session to cost around $200. If you need follow up treatments, these can amount to $200 for an area on the face and $350 for the bikini line or underarm. You can expect fees for larger areas such as the legs or back to be negotiable. In the case of photothermolysis, it is the underlying technology of how physicians go after the target area. When it comes to the heat that is given off by the light source, this destroys hair follicles.

What light waves have are different frequencies similar to radio waves that have different frequencies. When people tune in to different radio stations, this is how the machine works as it tries to get the correct light frequency for each person, based on the hair color, hair thickness, and skin color. Such a machine is about the size of a stacked apartment size washer dryer combination and to adjust the intensity of the light for each patient all you need to do is change the filters. In this case, the light flash lasts about 5/lOOOths of a second and about 30 pulses of light are done during a treatment.

Just like a stick of gum, the pulse hits a 1/2 inch by 1 1/2 inch area. In one session, because thirty of those pulses equal about 20 square inches, a surgeon can do a lip and chin area or both cheeks. You should get two to three treatments per area. For any follow up visits, consider having them about a month apart to allow time for the hair follicles to die and fall out. Time also allows for the hairs that were in their resting phase to become active, since only active hairs can be treated.

This is permanent hair reduction or long term hair removal, not permanent hair removal, according to doctors. It is possible for you to experience side effects like minor skin irritation and minimal swelling. When it comes to the side effects, they are temporary and as soon as the procedure is over patients can go back to their regular activities.
