Right Framing Can Transform Inexpensive Work of Art

By: Shirley Charles

A number of framing selections have the capability of transforming your inexpensive prints or posters into works of art that seem to be rather expensive. A wise decision to make is to go for mat colors that can enhance your art. Should you prefer the mat to pick up a color from the image then a double or triple mat is ideal. Keep in mind that top mats should be neutral while color is great for bottom mats. Double and triple mats add dimension to your framing.

Determining the mat width comes with considering the width of the frame as well as the size of the piece. What needs to differ is the width of the mat and frame. This results in the formation of a striped pattern that detracts from the image. Should you have a double mat then the double mat should extend to one half of an inch. The same width should be used on all sides of every mat for it to look good.

You could have a series of floating prints and other images with deckled edges. When an image is floating then it is hinged to the front of your mat board. Adding a border to the image is a matter of using a mat board. Although a print with uneven deckled edges is not perfectly centered on the mat it is still okay. When there is nothing distinctive about the edges the mats can be cut so that these pieces can be easily placed over the print's edges.

A tricky business is what framing photographs is. Considering formal photographs like wedding pictures and portraits ornate wood frames in silver, gold and a variety of natural finishes are great but considering art photos including those in black and white simple wood or metal frames in black or silver or with light natural wood frames should be used. Gold finished or cherry wood frames, for instance, compete with the grays in black and white photographs.

What works well with antique photographs are ornate frames. Dealing with old black and white photos involves the use of silver frames. From wooden frames in mahogany, cherry, and ebony walnut, antiqued gold finished frames are also great for sepia toned prints. What is great to use with traditional paintings including portraits and landscapes are ornate mouldings and fabric liners. Considering contemporary paintings, simple frames without liners should be selected.

Framing isn't just for prints, paintings, posters, and photographs. You may have some fabrics, theater tickets, old letters and postcards, political buttons, christening dresses, and the like and all of these could be framed and then you can hang them at home or even in your office. Used for gallery style framing is a minimalist look. Matte black wooden frames or ones with natural finishes are used here.

These frames come with straight edges and absolutely no ornamentation. For the thick mats used for gallery style framing they come in 8 ply and with various shades of white. For all sides of a 3 by 5 inches may come about mats that are 5 inches wide. Besides drawing the viewer's eye into the image the heavy mats also make it seem that the piece is important.

Popular with antique furnishings and reproductions are elaborate wooden frames as they work well. Reflecting the opulent mood of the 1980s are the high sheen silver and gold frames whereas the antiqued silver and gold frames reflect the humble spirit of the 1990s. Considering the metal frames from ten years ago the industrial metal frames are much different. Not only is the design for the new ones wider with cleaner lines but they have brushed finishes with cross hatching too. Same as earlier metal frames, these are also economical framing options.

When it comes to famous photographers they have been able to bring back art photography while restoration services are to thank for making it popular to restore and frame your family's own antique photographs. If you compare antique posters to many original artworks the may be expensive to frame but they are less expensive than the latter and their value will continue to increase in time. What they are ideal for are loft dwellers and those who just have lots of wall space.
