Polyethylene Foam

By: nickcampbell

Polyethylene foam can be divided into three useful and distinctive types. These are closed cell foam, EVA foam and moulded foam. One of the great things about polyethylene foams in general terms is its strength to weight ratio. You probably don’t realise just how many uses there are for polyethylene foam there are although if we give it its more common name of polythene, you might begin to appreciate just how many different ways it can be utilised.

Like all foam, polyethylene is available in many different grades and thicknesses. You would not recognise the foam used in body armour as the same substance used in the manufacture of plastic bags.

Whenever considering polyethylene as a possible material, a little bit of chemical knowledge can be useful. Whether you are dealing with foam suppliers or foam manufacturers, it is always good to speak a little of their language (a bit like going on holiday!). Any knowledge of polymerization or molecular weights can only be a good thing.

The thickness of the polyethylene foam depends on the chemical used as a catalyst in the polymerization process. For example, high density polyethylene is the result of introducing chromium as the catalyst. Polyethylene products are used extensively in the marine industries as well as the emergency services, transportation, medical and healthcare, sports and leisure and, of course in packaging.

Foam is used extensively in insulation, both thermal and acoustic. It is also highly shock absorbent making it ideal, when combined with its light weight, for protective purposes. At Technical Foam Services, we have experience across all of these fields and are used to dealing with polyethylene in all its many forms and thicknesses. We will always find the best solution for your specific requirements. We have probably dealt with something similar before so don’t reinvent the wheel, use our expertise.
