Patients beg off dental treatment due to fear

By: Farnes Linda

This girl is a self proclaimed coward. She shuddered in her chair when her ears got pierced. Thinking of two teeth getting removed really gave her the butterflies. People fearing a dentist's chair trip ranks right up there with flying, spiders and heights within the world of extreme phobias. So many people today, about 145 million are just plain scared so they just don't go get that dental treatment done, shares the American Dental Association. But today calming those fears by putting the patient out of his or her misery, so to speak is being done by dentistry.

But this lady is just so fortunate as her dentist not only practices general dentistry, but also attained a two year residency in anesthesia administration. Though he is not a mouth surgeon, he is still the sole dentist in the St Louis area licensed to use intravenous anesthesia to make a patient totally unconscious during a dental procedure in his dental clinic. States, many of them, mostly require dentists to get a special license before they can administer medications intravenously. These dentists are required to have advanced training in anesthesia and the aptitude to handle emergency situations, and to have emergency gears in their offices too.

Today, the most commonly used pain control in a dentist's office is local anesthesia, and this is commenced with a swab deadening the gums, blocking nerve endings and numbing the area that requires work before the dentist sets off to do the job. A temporary fat lip feeling is all you get afterward.

Many people get to relax thanks to sedatives or anti anxiety agents. Often, some patients get so giddy and euphoric after he or she is required to inhale nitrous oxide, which is sometimes called laughing gas and is essential in some treatments. Tranquilizers bring into being a state of conscious sedation in the patient who becomes receptive and awake, not at all in a deep sleep but he would indeed feel like he was in a haze.

A local dentist says that conscious sedation is very safe, as long as the patient is awake and verbally responsive, such as you asking, how you doing, Joe, and he answers.

Prolonged use of nitrous oxide can cause some patients to become nauseous, which is not a problem with an oral tranquilizer. For people undergoing conscious sedation, a companion who will care for him especially after the treatment and help him get home safely is needed. The injection works almost instantly but then the oral tranquilizer entails more time to set in and do what it is supposed to do. Within a waiting room, the pill is given to the patient and after the drug takes effect which is about a half hour or so and he is brought back to the dental chair.

With the debut of new gadgets and technologies that boost dentistry to a greater level technology, treatments are achieved with ease and speed today. We now see sedation dentistry, bridging the gap between technology and comfort well. You surely were spared from pain back at the dentist's office but then you could certainly hurt so much when your dental tab arrives as these new methods of pain free dentistry won't always be covered by insurance and most of the time, they aren't. A typical dental plan does not cover conscious sedation or nitrous oxide. Such are optional things and are to be shouldered by the patient.

Generally, medical or dental plans have coverage for unconscious sedation otherwise known as general anesthesia as this is often a necessity in treating an ailing patient.

There is one patient who is a self professed phobic. She gladly paid for the nitrous oxide that she needed. Kids that can't keep still, special patients, patients suffering from severe phobias or low pain thresholds and those who just do not get numb with local anesthesia, and patients with severe gag reflexes are able to benefit from general anesthesia otherwise known as deep sedation.
