Meet the running doctor

By: Clyde Balsh

A young lady with big dreams of becoming a world class runner and get the chance to compete in the Olympics came to this small town in 1984. In four short years, her greenish brown eyes have seen it all. She only finished sixth place in the 3,000 meter run in the Olympic event held at Seoul, Korea in 1988. Last December, the world class runner graduated from the local school. Since she was already considered the next queen of American middle distance running at a young age of 23, she easily bagged a three year contract to endorse a famous company that manufactures shoes.

But then this young Delaware native decided to stay right where she is for now. While going through her usual workout routines, she gets to see through all the campus' environs. As this 5 foot 6, 110 pound athlete flies to her own finish line, it's as if her two feet barely touch the path she runs on. She is always awkward with her newfound fame especially when people ask for her autograph. Being so down to earth, she states that she is just like any normal person and wants to be treated as such.

While she is normal and nice, she definitely is not average. She was the first girl from their town to ever get the chance to compete in the Olympics. She has already seized four American collegiate records and above that, she is one of the great members of not just six but seven world record relay teams. At school, she led her team, capturing eight individual NCAA championship titles and 14 Big East championship titles. That's not all for she's also got tons of the major awards.

Now that collegiate competition is behind her, she and the school's track coach are carefully planning her running career. Since she is seeing a huge transformation, she needs to make a lot of mental adjustments. Unless people have already experienced it, it would be hard for them to understand. It is her own self that places most of the pressure she feels to become a successful runner. One qualm she has is sustaining any injuries while being bound by the three year contract she has with the famous shoe manufacturing firm. With more eyes on her now expecting a lot from her, she has become nervous than how she was during her collegiate sports days.

Now that she's gone, a lot of people ask what will happen to the local women's track team now. She assured people that this great team will still move forward. She values her privacy thanks to the notoriety, pressures and responsibilities. Even her small family had to make some much needed adjustments and cope with the fact that they are now known as her parents and as her sister and brother. Since her parents were laid back, they would be very supportive but never pushy.

She keeps a wonderful company and this is a positive side to her stardom. Her friends are no other than the greatest and the brightest athletes that we all could only watch on television. She name drops, not pretentiously, but with genuine affection and concern for those with whom she shares this common link. This would be an example when asked when the last time that she was together with the runner she was with during a Hawaiian tour, she shared that the last she saw him was during the Olympic Games. She shares that it was so cool to spend time with him for three days, talking about the past and having fun.

She admits she has more time on her hands than she'd like, but she has not run out of things to do. She is truly busy for as a public icon, she doesn't just go to hr daily practices but she also has to present during certain track meets and be in photo sessions, banquets and interviews. On top of everything, this munificent lady will share her time and talents to the local school's track team by volunteering as coach assistant.

Being a volunteer in an area hospital will also enable her to keep up with the medical career she has put on hold. Indeed, being a volunteer there can truly assist this former psychology and premed major in knowing whether to continue with medicine when she is finished with professional running. Has she thought about her future' She foresees marriage and children, but said they will have to wait until her running career is established. She wants to see the world and achieve her goals first for now.
