Medical foam specialisation

By: William Hoffman

Foam is extremely versatile and is even used in the medical field. The making of foams for medical uses is very specialised. The reason for this is that there are many different factors to be taken into account.

Take, for instance, hydrophilic dressings which are designed to be used when a moist environment is needed. We, at Technical Foam Services, manufacture foam dressings of a standard suitable for use in medical establishments and the dressings are available in a series of densities as well as a wide choice of sizes.

Ideally the hydrophilic dressing should be comfortable, offer a high standard of protection for the wound and have anti-fungal as well as anti-microbial qualities.

Negative pressure dressings are a fairly recent development for the treatment of wounds. The method of treatment using this concept is that, firstly, the foam, usually polyurethane or polyvinyl-alcohol, is cut to the shape and size of the wound. Next, the foam is enclosed by adhesive dressing; the dressing will have a tiny hole in it. A pad is placed over the hole and attached to a generator which will then create negative pressure. The irregular applying of negative pressure may be useful in the healing process. This is because it stimulates the supply of blood to the affected area and also encourages cell growth.

Other medical foam dressings are used for a variety of different areas. There is not a single dressing than can be used for every type of wound and every stage of the healing process.

PVA foam is perfect for helping along the healing process of open or weeping wounds. They safely absorb whatever exudes from the wounds. When the PVA dries it stiffens but does not stick to the wound. This enables the medical staff to remove the foam dressing and not reopen the wound.
