Medical School Graduates Face Harsh Reality

By: Melisa jones

If you are a doctor who happened to finish med school in 1955, it was the golden time for upcoming doctors to grab great opportunities which meant great pay in jobs from different wonderful places. But there was one who wasn't as lucky. Though he has a medical school diploma, he was unable to get a career with high stability and pay, but is very competitive instead.

Though it was once the golden profession, it has now become rusty as the once sacred doctor patient relationship has been corrupted and the doctors also have less autonomy with the rise of managed care systems. Now, medical students learn where they will have their residencies right as soon as they graduate. The day of matching can cause a celebration for those who shall work for the hospitals they like. For those who are not as auspicious, this is just a dismal reality check on what awaits them.

Surveys state that there is too huge a supply of doctors and schools that produce them. More than 10 percent of doctors who have specialized in a certain field are unable to find jobs in some parts of the country according to a research conducted by the American Medical Association. Lessening enrollees in med school by up to 20 to 25 percent as well as closure of some US medical schools to avoid the surplus of physicians was recommended after a study funded by a company was conducted.

A medical institution located in Boston, which also serves and teaches medical subjects for a university stated that they will retrench many unfortunate doctors. A dean in a prestigious medicine school recalls that back in his time, things were not this way for doctors like him. Many positions await in the areas they wanted to pursue, according to him. Since the generalist fields such as internal medicine, pediatrics and family medicine have seen steady growth since the 1990s or earlier, many students in medicine prudently traverse these careers as seen in the past few years.

Specialty fields like anesthesiology, diagnostic radiology and psychiatry are on the decline, according to the national resident matching program. A good example would be the dramatic downtrend among the number of students who would opt to enter into the field of anaesthesiology. For the reason of few work opportunities available, a medical student in his senior year states that he is no longer eager to pursue studies in anaesthesiology. He avers that there's just too many of them now. One member of the American medical association states that the reported excess of doctors is not necessarily true especially in the rural areas like in her town where the demand for doctors is great.

She continues about the huge risk they take when they gamble on the best students not choosing to take a career in medicine thanks to the many damning things they learn about the medical profession despite the fact that these things may not be true at all Despite the uncertainty, many young doctors are optimistic, perhaps spurred by the popularity of TV shows with medical themes, making medical school applications high. The female doctor concludes that this is still the greatest job in the world despite the fact that they no longer make the kind of money they used to make or seize the freedom they used to work in.
