Market Online Or Else You Are Making a Blockbuster Blunder!

By: Rich Neal

"If your business is not on the internet, you are not in business!" - Bill Gates

No brainer, right?

Then why do the vast majority of network marketing leaders teach the exact opposite theory of one of the wealthiest humans on the planet? Maybe it's because they are merely teaching what their leaders', leaders' taught them. Maybe they figure since network marketing is built on relationships, then you must ONLY target people you already know such as friends and family. Or perhaps, they had some level of success with the old school approach and follow the "If it ain't broke don't fix it" motto.

Whatever their reasons for not embracing the internet, the 21st century has arrived and technology waits for no one! If you want to bet your financial future solely on making a list of the 100 or so people you know (90% of whom are not even interested in starting their own business), then inviting them to a home or hotel meeting, enrolling 3-5 people and hoping this can be duplicated by your team over the next 3-5 years then I wish you the best. But, couldn't you improve your chances if you targeted the 4 Million people searching the internet, every single day, already looking to make money from home?

Let me give you one example of a company that was highly successful for over a decade but didn't adapt to the 21st century quick enough… Blockbuster Video.

I am old enough to remember what video rental stores were like before Blockbuster came along. So, if you are under 30 or so, let me paint the picture. You would go into a small 500 sq ft "Mom and Pop" video rental store where they may keep up to a whopping 5 copies of the newly released movies. So most of the time you were put on waiting lists so you could come back to pick up that new movie as soon as it was returned by the lucky person who beat you to the store that weekend.

Then Blockbuster came onto the scene and totally changed the game. They had 5,000 sq ft stores with every movie under the sun. They dominated the video rental industry for nearly 20 years. But, have you noticed what has been going on lately? Blockbuster has been closing stores left and right. In fact they lost nearly half a billion dollars in 2009 and have plans to close nearly 1,000 stores. Why? Well, while they were going about their business using the "If it ain't broke don't fix it" motto, the world began to change and the internet became the greatest marketing tool ever created by man.

While Blockbuster was only marketing to people that were willing to come out to their stores each week, a company named Netflix was formed. Netflix had the idea of meeting consumers where they already were - the internet! What a phenomenal idea! Consequently, Blockbuster began to lose market share so they started their own online video rental service but Netflix had already established itself as the online leader and gobbled up the majority of the market share. At the time of this article, Netflix had 13 million subscribers versus 1 million for Blockbuster.

Now, in no way am I advocating the elimination of traditional offline marketing, but to do that exclusively just does not make good business sense. Why narrow your market to the few dozen people you come in touch with everyday, who may not even be interested in being an entrepreneur?

Just ask yourself these 2 questions, "Should I continue to follow in the steps of Blockbuster Video who plays second fiddle in an industry it once dominated because its business model was based solely on the premise that people would continue to come out to its weekly meetings, err uhh, video stores each week?" Or, "Should I emulate Netflix who broke away from old school philosophies and built an incredible online empire in a pre-established industry?"

No brainer, right?
