Kugel Hernia Mesh Recall Update

By: Larry J

It is obvious to even those people who have never suffered through the pain and debilitation of a hernia that it is a serious medical condition to endure. Worse yet, often the only effective treatment for a hernia, even in today’s world of medical innovations is invasive surgery that can lead to all types of complications.

In a few rare cases, hernias can be operated on in an outpatient type scenario, with the use of a special laser. Unfortunately, this is a very small subset of hernia cases. And even when a laser can be effectively used to treat a hernia, the biggest problem of a hernia is still present – a weakened portion of the inner abdominal wall that cannot heal quickly or evenly.

For decades, the healing process from hernia surgeries was hindered by the rapid growth of scar tissue where the hernia once was. To solve this problem, a doctor named Robert Kugel developed a special implantable mesh patch that was designed to be grafted into the spot where the hernia once was. The patch would clear out the scar tissue, strengthen the weak inner wall of a patient’s inner abdominal cavity, and would promote an even and quick healing process.

And though the patch did work for its intended purpose, there were severe and unforeseen complications brought about by the surgical implantation of the mesh patch. Many of these complications were far worse than the hernia was to begin with. Due to these complications, there have been numerous Kugel mesh lawsuits filed in courts all over the country, by plaintiffs who claim that they have suffered a number of debilitating side effects from the patch.

Hernia Repair Mesh Recall

Davol, Inc., the manufacturers of the Kugel hernia mesh implant, announced a recall of the patches from doctors’ offices and hospitals all over the world. The recall was intended to clear out the supply of the patches from the marketplace. However, patients who already had the devices implanted were advised to not seek out their surgical removal due to the danger of unnecessary surgery.

The reason for the recall was due to the defective nature of a part of the patch. At the center of the mesh hernia patch is a memory recoil ring, which is designed to snap the mesh into place following the surgical implantation of the device. The problem comes from the fact that these rings were defective, and when they were “snapped” into place, they cause a catastrophic failure in the mesh implant. This caused jagged and frayed pieces of the mesh implant to jut out into the abdominal cavity of hernia patients, causing bowel perforations and the slicing and puncturing of other internal organs.

Treating Hernia Mesh Patch Complications

One of the worst complications stemming from a hernia mesh failure is the onset of severe sepsis leading to damage throughout the body, and the catastrophic failure of the internal organs of the lower abdominal tract.
