If You Detect Pests Early You Can Save Your Home

By: Hazely Burns

Bugs can be a huge annoyance for homeowners. Pests that bite residents and invade the foundations of a house will not only alarm potential buyers, but possibly keep them from obtaining loans. Most lending institutions, including the federal housing administration and veterans administration, now require a termite inspection before the approval of a loan. If you are looking into a new construction loan banks will now often require the location treated with a chemical barrier against termites before allowing a loan.

A little known fact is that termites are to blame for the destruction of more homes and wood in the US than fire. He says, the main reason for this is because infestations are not usually found. He recommends to have termite inspections done regularly every three to five years. However, it is still possible for even a trained professional to miss the signs that point to infestation. Termites will often come between cracks in your wood, joists, and mortar or find a way in through voids in blocks. One of the warning signs of a potential termite infestation is reproductive insects swarming in the spring and fall seasons which will leave wings and bodies strewn over window sills. However, termites may be present in the structure of your home up to 5 years before you see this swarming.

There is not any inspector around who is capable of looking inside a house and determining with a 100 percent accuracy that there are no termites present. They attempt to inspect both thoroughly and closely, an experienced exterminator claims. They have the training to spot the signs, and they can tell you without a doubt that there are termites if they find the mud tubing termites travel in. Thankfully, most exterminators will back up their work with guarantees which will afford you some protection. chemicals used to treat for termites are effective for 15 years and treatments for other insects are usually done every 30 days.

Exterminators will also look out for wood borers and powder post beetles when doing their examination, both of which eat wood. Wood borers leave a powdery residue in the wood that they damage. Powder post beetles generally leave holes in wood that look similar to small sprays of buckshot. While fleas don't eat wood, they are also a common house pest that is very irritating. Pets aren't the only thing that brings in fleas, they can rub off from the grass onto people's shoes or pants cuffs. The exterminator takes care of fleas with a quick acting insecticide that can be sprayed all around the house inside and out.

Exterminators face all sorts of unique calls and may have to deal with anything from snakes to common insects. There are up to five different types of roaches that you may see in this general area, most commonly the German roach, but they can usually be taken care of with a simple treatment. The exterminator says that as recently as a few years ago, many people were able to handle pest control for themselves via powerful chemicals that used to be available over the counter. The laws are now being changed and updated by the government's regulatory pest control board. It is now necessary for pest controllers to be certified for their work, or at the least have to work directly with somebody who is.

Changing laws have greatly limited the availability of pest control chemicals. there have been many problems within the industry with people calling themselves exterminators who come into your home treat it with a substance such as kerosene and then head on down the road. There were lots of people doing this work part time who had no idea what they were spraying in homes. They would even combine chemicals and concoct things much stronger than were necessary. One such chemical was chlordane, used a lot in the industry although has since been banned due to improper use. Chemicals can be very dangerous in the wrong hands, although very useful and safe for those properly qualified to use them.
