How to Dress in 80s Fashion

By: Felexm Montini

The golden era of the 70s and the 80s would always be synonymous for bringing into life new fashion trends and style statements in to foray. The designs were state-of-the-art and leading edged and struck a chord with many people. The fashion industry had a very fast transition during those years. It was because of the launch of MTV which brought a huge revolution in the field of fashion, music industry and anything it relates to. During these years people have tried to redefine and also have adapted to sudden changes among both the women and men.

People used to sport tight clothes on the upper half and loosely fitting fabric on the lower half in the 70s. This style just reversed itself in 1980s. Women were seen in bold designs with pads on shoulders. Men started wearing full sleeve shirts made out of expensive fabric with baggy loose trousers which were tapered at the ankle joint. “Romantic Movement” inspired by the former ruffians was commonly started by a new designer romantic look. New crazes like designer jeans and “leather in clothing” were a trend among the public.

Business women started to wearing pointed and high heeled shoes. At parties, women wore glossy, bright colored and transparent shoes.. Jogging pants and tracksuits turned common leisure wear. Rock bands solemnized acid washed faded jeans, denim jackets in addition to piercing and tattooing as fashion statement of this era. Men started to wear earrings. The hair looked shiny with volume for which mousse was used a lot in those times. Even teenagers sported crumpled hair with varied shades of colour. The whole trend of hair was reversed as men had long hair whereas women had short hair.

People started to show off their wealth and position by wearing jewellery embedded with valuable stones. Women wore long odd earrings which sometimes didn't match each other. They sometimes even used single earrings. Fine gold and silver chains, punk style, neon colours in jewellery defined trends. Shape of the jewellery changed considerably. During the early 80s electronic watches with metal bands were quite a trend among the youth. Subsequently adults reverted to dial watches. But teens still choose to wear dynamically colored plastic watches with roman numerals. High class preferred to wear Movado style that was sleek and had a dot at 12. Once in a blue moon people also wore more than one watch at the same time. People also made it a point to use fine gold bracelets and hoops earrings.

Further, the buzz included leather designer bags, clutch bags for their compactness & attractiveness and briefcases. It was normal for ladies to match their footwear colour to their bags. A wide variety of shawls in several colours and patterns were around for different occasions. In the daytime they wore shawls with tank tops and with gowns during the night. Designer underwear for women also formed a part of the trend especially the ones with laces and coloured boxer shorts for men. Small eye glasses with metal frames became a trend over these days. However round and small glasses continued to be popular in the entire 80’s. The daily life in that decade was highly impacted by fashion.
