How To Give Your Leather handbags The Care They Deserve

By: Amanda T Smith

Have you always dreamt of leather handbags and have finally bought the bag of your dreams? Congratulations on your purchase! Leather handbags are not only great to look at but are also a very practical choice. They compliment almost all clothes and can be used in a lot of situations. With the right choice of clothes and accessories, you can make leather handbags look formal or casual. These bags never age; they are, in fact, timeless. But for them to last as long as they deserve, you have to take proper care of them.
Many of the leather handbags purchased today will still be in fashion for years to come. Buying leather handbags is like making a long-term investment. Leather, however, has one minor disadvantage. It needs to be given care and attention and has to be stored properly. If not, the leather will gather mould and your lovely leather handbags could easily be damaged. To take care of your handbag, you have to first know the type of leather it is made of. Is it suede or patent leather or is it made of lamb leather, cowhide etc? This will decide the kind of care you have to give your bag.
All leather handbags will need to be cleaned but the cleaning method can vary based on the leather type. Suede, for example, has a special cleaning agent made just for the sensitive material. While using the suede cleanser, be sure to clean with it gently. If you rub too hard, you might damage the handbag. A very important tip - Do not use any common eraser or cleanser on your precious suede handbag.
Other leather handbags will need cleaning too but it is much simpler to clean them. You can use a really soft cloth made of cotton for this purpose. Moisten the cloth a little but make sure that it is not really wet. Wring out any excess water from the cloth. Now carefully clean every part of your handbag. Take special care to access the areas where the straps meet, as most of the times dirt collects in such areas. Clean the whole bag thoroughly but make sure not to leave water stains on the material. Even a little water can cause mould to grow on your handbag.
After the handbags have been cleaned dry them. Let the air dry them, do not use blow dryers or other drying tools for this. You also have to condition the leather handbags every now and then. Here too, conditioning methods will depend on the material. Patent leather and suede can be conditioned with a protective spray. The others have to be sprayed with protective spray after applying conditioning cream on them.
Finally, take care to store your leather handbags when you are not using them. They need air to breathe and have to be stored in dry, dark and cool place.
