History Of A Medical Practitioner

By: John Moynihan

Over the course of time, many changes have occurred in the medical field, including shorter office hours, and more complicated diagnoses. Even though a physician's work is still demanding, it's still a lot easier than that of a country doctor in the years past.

A real-life film that is centered around life in a metropolitan area, a physician talks about what doctors were required to do back in the day. History shows that the first immigrant to come to the city was a physician. At the time, the doctor had come to the area to see if this community would be a good place to start a practice. He clearly discovered that there weren't many patients, so he went back home to pursue a practice in a more developed and prosperous area.

The doctors who already resided in this scantily populated area were having a difficult time making a living at their profession. When the Civil War broke out, they packed their medical bags and left for wartime hospitals. In that vicinity, the nineteenth century doctors were known as the greatest heros ever. Back then, it was a fearless young man who embarked on a medical career. Physicians never really knew if or when they would get paid, and they would work around the clock and on holidays too. For every handful of appreciated patients who paid their bills, there were numerous others who did not.

There were very few nights in a physician's life that managed to pass without a call of someone being sick, usually in the middle of the night. The physician and any close neighbors were certainly pulled from sleep by someone knocking loudly on the door, desperate to get help for a sick or hurt loved one. In any weather, a doctor would gather his horse and buggy to tend to the ill, despite his own need for sleep.

Those doctors were not always paid in silver coin for their treatments. Often, patients were forced to pay their bills using corn or other produce, or by doing work for the doctor. There were those physicians who, in able to supplement their meager salary, would concoct and sell their own home-brewed potions. This respective physician proved to be such an individual.

Before the days of strict government regulations, there were particularly well-educated physicians who set their own ethics aside to brew up homemade potions and cures. Actually, his remedies for neuralgia and headaches were fairly successful. Relief could be found in less than 20 minutes, for around 3 cents per dose.

There were physicians who obtained income by starting their own drug stores. A particularly enterprising doctor introduced the first drug store to town and cleverly positioned it on a main street. Taking his lead, another three doctors decided to start their own pharmacies as well. Before long, cities began constructing hospitals where doctors could practice medicine in reasonably clean and safe surroundings. It wasn't long after that codes of conduct and mottos were established, indicating quite clearly that the medical profession was adding a lot to the hospital's proficiency and confidence based on having better facilities and experience.
