Helpful Hints for New Organic Gardeners

By: Henry Greene

Even you can learn how to be a great organic gardener.

Even if you haven't ever grown a single plant in your life, you can learn to be a great organic gardener if you're willing to put in the time and effort.

The most often planted plant for beginning organic gardeners is the tomato plant. Tomatoes are some of the easiest to grow and care for. They can grow pretty much anywhere. Tomatoes will grow in just about every kind of garden. You can even grow them in their own containers. They will still grow even if you forget about them a lot. These plants are particularly rewarding for beginning growers because they can eat the tomatoes once they are ripe! Pardon the terrible pun but, when you grow a tomato plant you can literally eat the fruit of your gardening labor.

You should use mulch to keep the pests away from your plants and add nutrients to the soil of your garden. Weeds do not grow well in mulch. Many gardeners use mulch to cut down on the amount of maintenance they have to do and because it keeps their gardens healthy. The fact is that there are a lot of reasons why mulch is so popular.

Mulch helps regulate your soil's temperature and keeps the soil moist for a long time. One of the biggest reasons that mulch is popular is that it is very cheap and far less expensive than "regular" fertilizers. Mulch works really well and doesn't cost much at all.

Bees are important! You might not be thrilled to have them around your person, but bees are a godsend to a garden! Bees help your garden thrive by spreading and carrying pollen around from plant to plant. Pollen is needed for plants to flower or bear fruit. What this means is that you simply need to get used to the idea of dealing with bees. You might even think about taking steps to make your garden more "bee friendly."

Snails and slugs are two of the most irritating pests gardeners deal with. You should get over your squeamishness as soon as possible. There are a couple of ways you can cut down on the number of these pests in your garden but the truth is that they are really good at hiding in your plants. Get used to the idea of taking them off of your plants.

Some folk remedies include jars of beer strategically placed around the garden and copper wire running the length of your planting space. There are even special traps and special food that you can try to use to lure them away from your plants but sooner or later you will have to learn to deal with them first hand.

If you have a problem with pests who eat plants, consider letting some ladybugs loose in your garden. The ladybugs won't do any damage to your plants because they eat the pests that would otherwise wreak havoc on your garden. Pest eaters like ladybugs are fantastic for gardens. They are better for the environment. You won't ingest them by accident. And they keep your garden pest free!

Composting is a fabulous way to make your garden healthier. You can make your own compost without having to buy special things.

Starting a simple compost pile at home is easy. Compost piles can be made from everything from paper to caged pet bedding to food scraps (plant based)-even used tea bags and egg shells and coffee grounds can be added to your compost pile. Just leave the meat out of it and your compost pile will be just fine. This is how you make your own home grown fertilizer for your garden!

You'll be happy to know that all you need is a good gardening mentor (or a few articles to act as a mentor) and growing your first organic garden won't seem so hard anymore. Believe it or not, if you're willing to do the work, you could have a great organic garden before you know it!
