If you perform a search with Google for a keyword that you hope you site will be ranked high in the results pages for. You will most likely find that there is a site with a directory of related sites which you can ad your link to.

You might notice that when you put in a keyword for a certain region, a bunch of sites will come up that are not really very similar, but are located in that area. Many directories will make you pay to add your links, but since those sites are well ranked, it's helpful enough to be worthwhile. Now if traffic finds its way to your site through the directory, the relevancy of your keywords is driven up too. Try to see if you can find some no-cost directory sites too. You can find them with a little digging around.

The important thing for you to do is to perform the necessary research on the matter. One thing that's helpful is going to sites that have a good ranking under the key phrases and keywords that you are thinking about using. Can you find out how they achieve a high place in the search results? You will notice similar ideas come up time and time again if you do a search for the phrase "Search Engine Optimization". While it really isn't hard to do search engine optimization, it can be a bit confusing and it's always time intensive. If you feel like you can do all this yourself, do it, but if you don't think you have what it takes, go ahead and hire someone to do it for you.
