Developments in Foam

By: Rutland Savour010

Foam comes in many different grades and thicknesses, and is made from a wide variety of materials. One example of a still relatively new foam to the market is visco-elastic foam commonly known as memory foam. The key feature of memory foam is its ability to return to its original shape even after prolonged compression. The most widely used products made from memory foam, and probably the ones that come to mind when it is referred to, are in bedding. However, it is also used in stress balls - those objects which can be squeezed as hard as you like as the pressures of everyday living give you the need to vent, and still return to their original form. It is also used in the construction of the more advanced computer keyboards.

Melamine foam has also become increasingly useful, and as a result, a popular choice among foams. Its trade name is Basotect and it has particular applications in acoustics and as a magic sponge. The acoustic uses include the construction of baffles in recording facilities, panels and tiles for walls and ceilings and for general use when the absorption of sound waves is a requirement. The magic sponge is so called as many everyday cleaning tasks can be achieved by its use without the need for household cleaners or detergents.

Another exciting specialised use of foam is in the area of wound dressing. PVA foams, for example, have been found particularly efficacious in dressing open wounds. Hydrophilic foams are also especially useful as these allow access for oxygen enabling the wounds to breathe. Foams can also be used where negative pressure dressings are indicated.
