Choosing Ladies Casual Shoes

By: Charles Bracero

When someone tells you that you need to keep at least one pair of ladies’ casual shoes in your closet, you may find yourself asking, “What’s wrong with my sneakers? Can they not be considered casual shoes?” Well, strictly speaking, sneakers ARE casual shoes. But, let’s face it: There are just some occasions and outfits that call for something just a bit dressier and more stylish than your beloved pair of sneakers. Even when you are wearing simple jeans and a t-shirt, a pair of pretty little casual shoes can make you look trendier.

No matter how much of a sneaker junkie you are, there’s just something about slipping on a pair of comfortable yet fashionable pumps, flats, mules, or dressy thongs that’s sure to make you feel more ready to face whatever the day may bring. By wearing a pair of pretty casuals, it’s as if you’re always putting your best foot forward. You actually get the same kind of feeling that you typically get when you wear big hoop earrings or chunky silver bracelets – a feeling that somehow, even on a day of relaxation, you can be and ARE still a woman of style.

Even if you are the kind of woman who practically lives in jeans, you are sure to find a pair of ladies’ casual shoes that will suit your needs and preferences. There are actually so many possibilities that choosing just one pair can be a very difficult and overwhelming task. Fortunately, there are a few guidelines that might make the decision a bit easier for you.

As a general rule, casual attire means no stilettos and no glitzy footwear. High, pointy heels and metallic material tend to dress up any outfit, so it is best to keep away from these options if your intention is to project casual elegance. Wide, low or chunky heels are better options to achieve this kind of look. Loafers, flat sandals, and ballerina shoes are the most popular and versatile choices in casual shoes for women. They look fantastic with jeans, slacks, and dresses and are a lot less expensive than boots which serve almost the same purpose. To help you decide exactly which type or height of heel is appropriate for a casual day’s attire, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Shoes with a bit of heel – even low heels – are perfect for pairing up with longer pants. Wearing flats with pants can make the pants hem drag on the floor and look way beyond casual and right into sloppy. Pants of average length or those that are just a bit shorter can also be nice with heeled shoes, but if the pants leg is really on the short side (just hitting the top back of the shoe or the area right above it) then it is best to skip the heel completely and go for classy flats such as a loafer or a dainty thong. Whatever type of ladies’ casual shoes you eventually choose, what’s important is that you remain true to your personal fashion sense. After all, the whole point in going casual is to be comfortable with what you’re wearing.
