Can Zamzuu Really Compete With Established Online Shopping Sites?

By: Marcia Norman

YTB Travel has stepped into the fray to compete with big name online travel sites with the introduction of Zamzuu. But just what is Zamzuu? Is it a desperate attempt by YTB to rebrand itself after successfully defending itself against an attack from the California Attorney General or is Zamzuu a truly legitimate opportunity.

Online shopping sites like Overstock.com and Pricegrabber.com definitely have a headstart and a decided advantage. But the the management at Zamzuu seem confident that they will dominate online shopping arena. Zamzuu plans to propell itself to online shopping prominence by employing a strategy made popular in the 1980's by AOL. They will do something unheard of in network marketing; they will simply give their business away.

It's a concept called "carpet bombing". Jan Brandt, who was the mastermind behind the Aol Direct Mail CD campaign was quoted as saying, "...when you give people a convenient way to try a quality product, you quickly develop a loyal customer base." AOL employed this strategy and exploded from 250,000 subscribers to over 8 million over a 4 year period. Zamzuu believs that by employing the same strategy, they can develop loyal users of their state of the art online shopping site.

Zamzuu leadership believes that they are ahead of the next great market shift in global business. They took advantage of market shift with YTB in 2001. Less than 10 percent of travel (a $7 trillion a year industry) was being booked online. By the time YTB hit its stride in 2008 over 70 percent of travel was being booked online. Everyone from American Express to Donald Trump was jumping into the game.

In the last quarter of 2009 retail sales topped $92 Billion, only 3 percent of that was online. Historically, the biggest shopping day of the year has been "Black Friday", the Friday after Thanksgiving. For the first time, in 2009 that day switched from "Black Friday" to "Ciber Monday". People going online for better deals after the traditional "After Thanksgiving Day Sales". Is Zamzuu poised to take advantage of the beginning of a Market shift? If it is, where will the people who position themselves be when a 3% market share goes to 30, 40, 50 even 70%. Where will you be?
