Acne is traditionally one of those conditions that is considered by the general consensus as a coming of age thing, a rite of passage for ushering children through adolescence and into full-blown adulthood. For the people that have acne, and severe cases of acne, it is less of a rite of passage and more of an ongoing medical nightmare. Though there have been great strides made in the realm of modern pharmacology in an effort to ameliorate the most severe cases of acne, the frustrating fact is that acne is an extremely difficult condition to treat with any measure of success. It is, in most cases, a condition that has to be muddled through, and unfortunately, it is far worse for some people than it is for others.

And, for those few with a peculiar genetic disposition for severe acne, there is even less hope, because for those people the severe acne will be with them for the rest of their lives. This is why drugs and medications that promise cures and remedies for acne are so popular, and why so many people will be willing to do just about anything in order to make their severe acne go away.

One of the promised miracle drugs of the past few years that has promised to cure acne, even in the most severe cases, unfortunately has brought with it a host of side effects that are far worse than the disease that it was designed to treat. The drug's name is Accutane, and it was developed and marketed for those with the most severe cases of acne, for whom nothing else had previously worked. And while this new medication did work wonders for most of those acne patients who took it, the Accutane side effects were incredibly severe and even life threatening.

Adding insult to injury, as well, is the fact that for a small percentage of the acne patients who took Accutane to cure their acne, the drug actually made their acne much worse than it had been, due to a peculiar chemical reaction between the medication and a genetic condition in some patients. Because of the serious nature of the Accutane side effects, there have been a large number of lawsuits that have been filed against the makers of the drug on behalf of the patients who have suffered from those side effects.

Roche Pharmaceuticals has been in the courtroom numerous times base on the damage caused by the side effects of Accutane, and they have lost every single case. This has resulted in the drug maker paying out millions in compensatory damages to patients who used Accutane. Roche Pharmaceuticals also faces the prospect of many more lawsuits – more than 1,000 Accutane lawsuits have been filed against them, and are in pending litigation. There is a movement on the part of some plaintiffs to consolidate their lawsuits into a single class action suit, but that movement is still preliminary.
