A Few Seo Myths You Actually Can't Afford To Believe In

By: Tom Lewis

Driving traffic to your site with SEO is one of the most reliable yet oldest methods around. Due to your site properly targeting its audience, visitors will come to your website and take action. One of the best parts of all of this is that driving this traffic to your site doesn't cost a thing. But many people are still lagging behind when it comes to ranking well with the search engines. The field of search engine optimization has expanded so much that it is now full of fables that make it difficult for many to understand the true dynamics of the search engines. If your intent is to use the search engines in your favor then you need to learn all about the different elements of SEO and how they interact with each other. In this article we will be busting a few such myths that you should know before you get into it.

A frequently repeated myth is that your website needs a special page built for SEO purposes in order to rank highly. Any of your pages can be highly ranked by the search engines as long as you use basic SEO principles. So creating SEO based landing pages just doesn't make sense. You don't need landing pages for organic search listings, unlike PPC, where they are necessary. In other words, the page where you want to get the traffic should be a part of your main site, rather than it being something on the outside. If you have the problem of pages not getting enough traffic, the solution is not to build new pages, but better optimize the ones that are already there. This is a fairly straightforward principle if you understand that landing pages are only to help you convert your traffic.

A strange SEO myth that is quite common is that PPC marketing will have an effect on how your site performs in the SERPs. This is completely mistaken. Quite a few people believe that by running PPC ads they will be able to improve the ranking of their website in the search engine pages. What you need to keep in mind is that PPC and SERP rankings have no influence on each other. This is why wasting money on PPC assuming that your site will rank better isn't right. Instead of this, you should focus more on increase your websites backlinks and bring in more quality content that will ensure that your site's rank keeps on increasing. Use your common sense and be practical when deciding whether or not this story is accurate. The notion that each of your pages should be devoted to optimizing only one keyword is another SEO myth that needs to be addressed. There are still many SEO experts and as well as small businesses who believe that each of the pages on your site should be optimized for one single phrase, which is far from the truth. The basic premise behind this belief is that your page will rank better if it's very focused. The main problem with this whole technique is that when you try to write a page that targets a single phrase, it will not sound natural. And secondly, you're just wasting the page when you could have added more keywords. There is no good reason to devote a whole page to just one keyword when you could be using several related keywords as well. If you really want to optimize your page, use as many of your keywords as you can think of. This is the way to optimize your site for more traffic. You can find out for yourself by looking at your web analytics that you are getting traffic from several, possibly many different keywords. It's completely okay to optimize for more than one phrase and is critical for your search engine success.

A majority of people also believe that the words in your Meta tag should be used on that particular page. Although this idea has been dis-proven, it is still taught. The truth is that the Meta tags were created to use keywords not already on the page. The main point, however, is that neither Google nor Yahoo use these tags for ranking.

Another other myth that is quite common and you should be aware of when you are optimizing your site is that your site will be banned if you don't conform to Google's rules and regulations. This is due to the fact that most of Google's web master rules are a matter of good judgment. It's not compulsory for you to study them if you are certain you are in the right. Just make sure you're not doing anything the search engines would think is direct spamming/cheating. Reading through these guidelines at least once is a good idea because they are always being updated and it will help you learn more.

How much you need on your site is another SEO myth. People who are new to practicing SEO think that the copy on your site should be at least 250 words in length. Quality of information should not be overshadowed by a desire to meet a minimum word count since there is no magic number. The idea behind this myth is to optimize a larger number of keywords. Base your content needs on quality information and not length as a short version can be just as effective.

Some people believe another common fallacy which is that if you update your site frequently with fresh content it has a great benefit on your SERP rankings. Adding fresh content frequently to your website will lead to spiders visiting your site more often but it won't affect your SERP rank. So if your site doesn't really need an update, then don't forcefully make the change just for the search engines. It will have little effect on them. All you need to do is conduct a search and you will find that a lot of the sites that rank well in niches that are quite popular have not been updated in quite some time. If you take the time to investigate various claims, you won't easily become a victim to myths. Since myths can set you back with your goals, it's a good idea to research everything before believing in it. The better informed you are, the more successful you'll be.

Despite the fact that these myths are quite widespread, you shouldn't allow them to make your search engine optimization efforts even harder. When you first begin promoting websites in the search engines it is vital that you know the truth so you can make sure you are not wasting time working in the wrong direction.
